Living Sustainably With Beccy Cloke

Beccy Cloke is an accomplished events horse-rider, former Spring Fashion Ambassador for the Victorian Racing Club, wife to ex-AFL footballer Travis Cloke and a mother to two rescue dogs, two rescue cats, a rescue goat, another dog, two horses, two ponies and one baby girl, Scarlett.

"I knew my baby girl was going to have to live on this planet through a trying time and that I’d have to do best to help lower my impact and teach others how I was doing that. "

Although Beccy grew up in the city, her love for animals, nature and the great outdoors led her to life on a hobby-farm. She now uses her platform to share tidbits about her life as a new mum to Scarlett and her passion towards preserving our planet so that her daughter can experience all it has to offer.

Tell us a bit about yourself and where your passion for the environment stems from?

Originally my passion for the environment came from wanting to sustain it for animals. I think that comes from always being an animal lover. I’ve always cared about animals and from a young age have felt horrible over what we are doing to their habitats for farming etc. The passion only increased when I fell pregnant with Scarlett. I knew my baby girl was going to have to live on this planet through a trying time and that I’d have to do best to help lower my impact and teach others how I was doing that.

What are your everyday hacks for reducing your impact on the environment?

We attend a local market each Saturday morning to purchase organic produce and only use our reusable bags. I am a vegetarian but we also purchase sustainably caught/farmed organic meats and fish for my husband Trav and Scarlett. Over-fishing and clearing of land for cattle is having a catastrophic impact on our environment. Knowing where your fish and meat comes from can make a huge difference. We are also doing our best to reduce our plastic use. It’s not easy in this day and age but it is possible!

You’re a new mum to gorgeous Scarlett, any tips on reducing waste with kids?

Food and toys…. again know where they come from and how they are made. I try to avoid plastic toys but Scarlett does have a few. We will reuse and then donate them. A lot of kids food is individually wrapped so I also avoid these and make Scarlett’s food and treats myself- this also means we can avoid nasties like preservatives.

What does living a sustainable life mean to you?

It means everything. Our children need to live on this beautiful planet. I’ll make all the changes I can and try to gently educate others on what I have learnt so that they too can make changes to look after the planet for future generations.
